If you upgrade the OS I believe your settings/authorization should be kept. If you reinstall by wiping the HDD, it will be wiped as well.
Either way, you can copy over your books and read them on any other authorized instance of ADE. You can only be authorized on 6 computers/devices, and I believe they will give you more as time goes by (to compensate for lost devices/old computers).
It is stored as a (copyable
) config folder somewhere (not sure where) but I believe would be based on hardware-specific details of some sort.

I have never heard that they will give you back authorization slots if you deregister.
