This is not set by default (I wish it was ).

Perhaps your books were newly imported? calibre recently added code to properly import mobi7/8 authors by swapping them around. Any books added after then would no longer be imported as LN, FN -- now that the author field is properly created, it needs to be swapped when going on the Kindle.
