I can honestly say that my Kindle, which now has close to 1000 books on it, is not slower than when it was empty, when it comes to actually reading books. The only thing that slows down with additional content is global searching. Nothing else (that I can think of, anyway) is slower.

Actually it only checks once every few days. I have a Kindle Touch with SO, and the offers VERY rarely update. It's certainly not as if SO mean a constant stream of communication between the Kindle and Amazon (and, of course, if you leave WiFi disabled, it does nothing at all).
