IMO - The marginal extra costs in disk space and time to backup the entire library so as to mitigate the risks of not being able to achieve a complete and full recovery of your library would be a worthwhile investment.

I keep two forms of backups:
1 - The library as a whole. So I can quickly reinstate my library once I have to kill over my library comp...
2 - a backup of the eBooks (mainly ePubs) with metadata properly updated (modify ePub is your friend), because I've run into database getting corrupted due to a sync job (yes, I sync the library pretty much automatic...) gone bad and had to redownload out of three stores :F
I tack 1 on a NAS and keep 2 around on a seperate USB stick which I drop off in a safe.
