@asqueue - If you think this is changed behaviour I suggest you verify using an earlier version of calibre

The fact that you're using 32bit could be the problem - conversions (as someone already said viewing a MOBI does an under-the-hood conversion) is one of the few features of calibre that materially benefits from 64bit and more memory. I don't think throwing more memory onto your computer would help unless you upgrade to 64 bit windows and calibre.
