You could periodically touch the screen to get a word definition. That should keep it from going to sleep. On the old K1, I used to scroll the scrollwheel to keep it from going to sleep, but that isn't an option on the Paperwhite. You must be able to touch the screen, or you couldn't use the Paperwhite.
