That may be so, but Harry Potter is still very good. There must be some reason why so many people read it.

That being said, I do think there are many books that are far better.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, for example. Or many of Neil Gaiman's books (including their collaborative effort Good Omens.)
Douglas Adams, for obvious reasons.

LoTR is much better written. Then again, it is much better written than most books. A little obtuse at times (the first time I read it, I skipped over most of Frodo & Sam's journey after the Breaking of the Fellowship), but... AMAZING!
