you must sync first, but once you do, on my Windows 8 machine they are stored in:
C:\Users\myname\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition\kepub
(as you may know their filenames are something intuitive like 4f727ae4-36ed-4594-bbb1-4e926c7bd4fd )
