Den noe lapsete franske adelsmann St. Yves utsettes for adskillige gjenvordigheter på sin flukt fra engelsk krigsfangenskap under Napoleonskrigene. Forfatteren av "Skatten på Sjørøverøya" og "Dr. Jekyll og Mr. Hyde" har denne gangen prioritert en boblende humor fremfor det fortettede drama, med stort hell.
