I think this will prevent the error that results if the *.patch files are edited with an editor such as Notepad/Wordpad which inserts a unicode marker at the beginning of the file, but if in doubt use Notepad++ to edit the files in Windows.

Wouldn't it be nice if the program checked the configuration file for a
byte order mark, and removed it if it is the utf8 byte order mark or rejects the file if it is another byte order mark (or handles the encoding)?
