I believe the term "progressive" refers to championing reform, efficiency, prosperity, scientific methods, civil liberties, democracy, suffrage, education, opportunity, anti-trust, anti-corruption, etc., as practiced in part by political leaders of the last century such as Theodore Roosevelt.
