Isn't it more convenient to have music in the Cloud?
What is it that makes these newer units "not as nice"?

It's convenient, but I always forget it's there and shuffle through my local media instead.

I don't always know what I want to listen to when I want to put on some music, so most of the time I open up Spotify and go "What now?!" iTunes Radio/Songza/TuneIn/Radium work better for me for that reason.
The current Nano isn't very comfortable to use like the past iPods. It doesn't have enough bulk to sit in your pocket, and it's so thin that any other headphones besides the included EarPods will make it tilt to the side when it's on a flat surface. On mine, you can actually see the glue they used to stick the screen on showing through whenever it's syncing.
It doesn't have a hold button either.
It looks nice, but that's about it.
