I assume that the message you are seeing in calibre is "The app on your device is too old and is no longer supported. Update it to a newer version.".

In Calibre Companion (CC), please tap on the three dots to see CC's menu then choose "About". Post back with the version number you see at the bottom of that dialog box.

EDIT: also, what version of calibre are you running?
