Quick update - I'm still curious as to why Moon+ does this, but only in an academic sense. I went ahead and invested $3 into Calibre Companion and I am highly impressed. It does exactly what I want and unsurprisingly integrates smoothly with my existing Calibre sorting and metadata, such as it is.
