Lack of a good answer to that question is one of the reasons I no longer have any iThings in my house.
I do have an old iPod Video in our minivan attached to the DVD system for watching movies. It can be managed directly with an old version of Sharepod which does not require any iTunes components (or ANY installed software) on the PC at all.

I hear about MediaMonkey quite a lot, but I never cared for it.
And I've never been clear on whether or not it requires iTunes to be installed as well.
