I can't talk about the Kindle, but the Sony works fine with a Mac using Calibre (although I did register mine first on a Windows VM). Calibre also handles some format conversions through it's GUI (so long as there is no DRM on the file).

Whichever she decides to get, point your friend here and there should be some-one who can help, or at least point her in the right direction, if she runs into any problems.
