I think the majority of the failed firmware updates are from people who install the INCORRECT firmware on their device.

Remember, that while Kobo do provide an easy means to get code ONTO the box, the ONLY supported means of getting updated f/w is either via WiFi sync OR Kobo Desktop; any other source of updates is done at the users own risk.
