The only time I would buy a physical book for novels is as a collector's item or something I notice in a second hand bookstore or garage sale etc..

The exceptions to all of this is I still prefer to buy Tabletop roleplaying games rulesbooks in a physical format, although I often buy an electronic format of these books first to see if the physical version is worth buying.
