Nick, thank you for the extensive report. It seems that alternative 2 (and also 3) is working. Why exactly it didn't work the first time (after the whole history of troubles with Calibre and usb), might be to complicated to reconstruct. Nevertheless, your case was very instructive. I think the main lesson we learned is: Don't use alternative one of the patch, if you use Calibre to transfer books to the ereader.
