Someone must have modified the preferences as this is not default behavior.

For a normal add:
Preferences: Adding books: (the add process tab)

remove the tick next to Automatically convert...

If you use the Auto add folder
Preferences: Adding books: (the automatic adding tab)
remove the tick next to Automatically convert...

Tick the formats to IGNORE (don't auto-add)
