The plugboard I'm using is as per
PeterT's shelf management guide and it's set to 'Any Format' - 'Any Device'.

I'm not sure which utilities plugin you mean here. I've installed your
'Kobo Utilities' plugin and I've recently started to use
jgoguen's '
Kobo Touch Extended Driver' and neither of them appear to have any reference to sorting.
