I would also say, try a tablet.
The gray background is actually easier for most people to read than black on white. However, everybody has different eyes and may perceive contrast differently. The focus of these ereaders is to make it easier for the majority to read. Clearly, doesn't address you. A tablet, however, can give you the white background that you want.
