Even for my Sony PRS-T1 which as you said is not bad at all for pdfs compared to many 6" readers there, I would usually use k2pdfopt to optimize pdfs beforehand, because its reflow mode is very slow (more than five seconds to turn the next page) and it shows no images and reflows no scanned pdfs(just its OCR layer), we should leave the zoomed page for normal view if we want to use handwriting getting back to zoom again, usually fit-to-landscape mode+crop function is just not good or fast enough etc.
Using k2pdfdopt eliminates all those shortcomings for me when I want to use PRS-T1 for A5 or even A4 sized pdfs.
