The Kindle does have a browser and you can download .mobi/.azw3 books with it -- handy for accessing a calibre content server with your personal elibrary. There is also
http://www.Gutenberg.org or our very own MobileRead library for downloading public domain books, also easily available through the browser, and similar resources.
