Marty, I'll chime in here, although Kris will be the ultimate authority.
Marvin does store books in their original zipped format. However, when Marvin adds a book to its library, two uncompressed versions of the cover (large and small) are extracted from the epub and stored separately. These are used in the Home screen and Library screen.
Additionally, Marvin maintains a database of annotations, highlights, Deep view content, bookmarks, etc.
Both the iOSRA and MXD plugins store caches in Marvin's storage as well. These are not large, but they do take some space.
Kris can fill in the gaps, but I think that explains at least some of the additional storage you're seeing.
