If you are having issues reading on the backlit screens, you might try an app called
f.lux on the computer or iOs, or one called
Twilight on android devices. Both are free, and both work by shifting the screen's color profile to more resemble that of the ambient light and filtering the blue spectrum. It will take a couple days to get used to - at first it seems a little orange.
I have been using Flux for several months and it has completely changed my relationship with my devices.
ETA: Unfortunately f.lux is only available on iOs if you are jailbroken
