No, you can do that from Mac and the other OS that some people use.

Install the USBnetworking add-in for your Kindle model;

You might find that the USBnetworking control buttons for KUAL are easier to use for a newbee;
So you may want to install KUAL before USBnetworking.

Use Putty for Windows as the ssh client (Mac has a "real" ssh client pre-installed).

Lots and lots of posts and threads here about using ssh (and putty).
