Everything depends on what YOU want to achieve!

I stick to reading books in ePub format that I manage via calibre.

I use the Kobo Utilities plugin to store the reading percentage and status of all books on the Glo.

I have a series of automated column definitions in place in calibre.

One is based on the date a book was added to calibre and assigns the book to a shelf / collection name "monthadded" and will have the value "ZZ_Added_yyyy_MM". This allows me to easily see when books were added, and read some books based on how long I've had them.

Another column gets set when a book is finshed and has the value "Finished_yyyy". This makes it easy to see how many books were read in a given year.

Finally I have a custom search defined in calibre that looks for all books on the device that are finished and are not on my "Reference" shelf. This lets me then easily select those books and remove them from my device.
