That over many years and many PCs through XP to Win 8.1 in the Professional or higher versions (I cannot recall how pre-XP version updates worked, and have little experience of the "Home", etc. type versions). Of course, a PC manufacturer's own cook-up of Windows may perform differently.

Am not questioning what you say. Am just interested as to what is behind your experience, in case is come across elsewhere.
So WU never asks you do to a restart - and you never get the Windows is Updating itself - X% done - don't turn this <bleeping> computer off!! as its shutting down and starting up again.

If so, how the heck do you did you manage do that?

I get the 'lock icon' on the shutdown option that theducks is referring to if I neglect to do the restart when it asks me. Maybe one can use Sleep at that point, but I've never been game to try it.

I won't even let WU start the downloads unless I am confident I have the time to do the whole enchilada, nor do I start any long running tasks until its done everything it needs to do.

I'm not aware of any OEMs that mess with WU, IIRC under the terms of their agreements with MS they're not allowed to, its a pretty stringent agreement, or it was when I last saw one, which admittedly was last century.

When I can I replace the OEM install with a vanilla install from MS media, if there are any OEM utilities needed (rarely - most of it's 3rd party crap) I download them separately.

I've never some across anything that claims to obviate the need to do restart on some windows updates.
