theducks: How do you end up getting it to do that? My experience is that, providing one's choice is to choose to download and install updates, it proceeds to do so immediately (assuming an internet connection is available) leaving no part of the process for "later in the day".
That over many years and many PCs through XP to Win 8.1 in the Professional or higher versions (I cannot recall how pre-XP version updates worked, and have little experience of the "Home", etc. type versions). Of course, a PC manufacturer's own cook-up of Windows may perform differently.
Am not questioning what you say. Am just interested as to what is behind your experience, in case is come across elsewhere.
