Hmmm... after re-reading
all of the advertising by Amazon for the paperwhite, the sharing of quotes, etc. is portrayed as a feature of the paperwhite itself and no where is it stated that it only works on books purchased from Amazon. Seems like 'adjusting' your books so that they can have quotes, etc. shared is actually helping Amazon meet its advertising claims for the device.
