No 6" e-ink reader is going to be good for pdfs, because they are usually formatted for a much larger page size. You have to scroll and zoom to be able to read the whole page, usually. You would have to see which college books are available for which devices. I know Amazon shows you which devices are compatible with the book, if not all platforms are usable with a given book.

You would probably be better off with a tablet for reading pdfs and college textbooks.
