your call - clearly Amazon don't see it like that - I'll accept that the correct label here is counterfeit, not pirated, though -
I could buy an epub , format shift it, send it to Kindle ( in fact I have done all of that, repeatedly).
But once I insert an ASIN I am making that book appear to be a "bought from Amazon store" item & that to my mind is counterfeiting. To put it another way, by adding in the ASIN I am attempting to trick Amazon into providing the extra functions that are only offered for books actually bought from Amazon. I thought that was Kovid's rationale for refusing to implement such , but I could be wrong on that. If such hacking becomes widespread it will attract unwanted attention here, from Amazon - which is not in the communities' wider interest.
