I'd ask a slightly different question. Why does it need to open .doc files. Why not just print to pdf?
I thought the same when I was looking, but then realised that a you cannot edit anything on an ereader (Iliad/DR scribbles excluded), it is generally very little more work to print to pdf & copy across rather than just copy the doc or rtf file. I agree that pdf's have their own little problems on ereaders however.
