So, I wrote to Kobo about this. This is the response I got:

Eric, we would like to please you the best way possible for this is what we aim to do, however Analog Magazines are not compatible with eReader simply because eReaders are e-Ink devices which display black and white while magazines display coloured pictures which cannot be displayed on eReaders. Eric, we are sure you do not want to read a magazine in black and white especially that pictures show colours and give you that real effect of a magazine.
Sigh.

I have replied to them, noting that an issue of Analog is more akin to a paperback book than a glossy magazine and that the only colour is on the cover. But I doubt this will make any difference.

I do despair sometimes.
