The files downloaded via the Kobo desktop app can be opened with calibre if they don't have DRM. The files don't have an extension, so you need to add epub as an extension. Then, if they DRM free, they can be treated as an epub.

But, what are you trying to achieve? The screen shot from the Kobo website seems to say the books are already in your library. And it sounds like you downloaded them to the desktop. Syncing the Aura HD either using the desktop app or WiFi should put these books onto the device. That will give full kepub function. Is this not happening?
