I'm loathe to recommend creating faux file types and OS level associations thereto for the following reasons
- I did it for pdf's but one of my pdf tools didn't like dealing with .pdf1 file types
- If you need to do a windows reinstall you'll likely lose the faux file type associations
- If you decide you're bored with Windows Picture Viewer you want to use the new 'you beaut wunderbar image viewer' then you have to edit the faux extension associations.
And let's face it most users would no more know how to create a new file type and associations than they would know how to fly on a broomstick
