Solar eclipses can
only happen at New Moon, and lunar eclipses can
only happen at Full Moon. Think about it, or better yet, get two balls and a flashlight, put them on a table and see for yourself.
Hint: A solar eclipse has the Moon directly between us and the Sun (i.e. we're in the Moon's shadow), and a lunar eclipse has the Earth between the Moon and the Sun (i.e. we're seeing the Earth's shadow on the Moon)
