99% of spam never gets to me. I use ExchangeDefender in front of my mail server, and it catches a LOT of crud. Which is a good thing, since my email address hasn't changed in 23 years and has been published in quite a few books. (Yes, I've owned my own domain for 23 years. And run my own email server. )
I agree, for a portable, well filtered and spam free email account, Gmail is as good as it gets. I connect to several gmail accounts from my Outlook client. But the web interface will never be my first choice.
