Skip Shannara altogether and head directly to Landover.

Seriously, I like the clash of cultural assumptions inherent in the "modern person gets thrust into magical world" subgenre of fantasy, and the Landover books do that well. Putting my money where my mouth is, this makes the third time I've bought books 1-3; I bought the mass-markets as they came out, lost track of them a move or two ago, bought the physical omnibus, and just now bought the digital omnibus with the Amazon deal.

Note that this is a collection of the first three books; there are three more.
