No you don't. Only if the book needs to be transferable, and thus associated with an AdobeID. Library books do not need continuity like that, so you can leave it tied to the Sony device.

Of course, the device also allows you to sign into/create an AdobeID, from what I've heard.

In any event, rcentros originally asked why you need a Sony account to "sign up for OverDrive", which makes no sense to me, else how could I checkout Kindle books?
Sony account can serve as an AdobeID, and the OverDrive app asks you to sign in with an AdobeID, maybe this is what was meant?
