Yes, you're right, and all the iOS system fonts are, indeed, displayed (yes to choking on chalkduster). But in the two apps that do it (shubook and stanza) theres no apparent load on the app, so might be worth a look...
Sideloading would be good, too. There are a couple of apps which allow this, as well. *Thinks* Duokan, IIRC. And something else I really cant remember.
[edit] oh wait. the readers I am thinking of have built in servers and they do it somehow like that.
