They aren't useless. If you stay at a hotel and go down to the pool or beach they are a great place to put the room key card, money for the pool boys who bring you the drinks or your credit card or room charge card. I don't take my purse or wallet to the pool/beach but I do take my ereader. On planes, of course, they are a good place to put that boarding pass for your connecting flight or anything else you might need that you don't want to dig through your bags for. I don't always use them but the fact they are there makes it easier when I need a place to put those cards or tickets. Mine are in a fold over snap shut section much like a wallet which also gives extra padding to protect the reader.
