The only time I'll probably be willing to go to "great lengths" as you would call it would be if I Really, really loved the book, or more likely really needed that in eBook format.
The problem that often crops up is that it is often much more difficult to find out if a legitimate eBook version is available or not, especially when Darknet Versions are easily available.
That's what I really like about Baen, that when you search for one of the books they carry, the Legal version is one of the first ones to pop up, making finding a darknet version 'inconvenient' . So the only people who are probably going to keep on searching are the ones who
a) Can't afford it or
b) Won't buy it
Both categories which will not buy one now anyway, so should not really be considered a lost sale.
