I don't have these problems because I don't use the native Nook Library or the native Nook Reader for my books on my HD+. But the situation you describe is normal for the HD/HD+ on the stock OS. Only books opened into a reader (native or otherwise) from the native Nook Library will display the cover “thumbnail” for that book in the native recent drawer. If you open the same book from an app such as CC, the native recent drawer will only show the app icon for CC, no matter what reader you open the book in.
I gather your aim is to easily access the last read book launched by CC, right? If you simply use a reading app such as Moon+ or Mantano, then all you have to do is put a shortcut to the app on your home screen and you’ll always have instant access to your last read book. However, If you must use the native Nook Reader, the only way I know to do it is to use an app launcher utility such as Edge Quick Actions which has its own recent drawer function. Whenever the native Nook Reader is launched, even from CC, its app icon will show up in Edge so you can easily access the reader again. There’s a free version of Edge in the Play store if you want to try it out.
