From what I've seen so far (a probably quite limited POV), most readers have rather good hardware, but the software looks as if made by amateurs.
It works well enough, true, but there rarely is the feeling of cutting edge technology, or even well thought-out implementation.

Quite right!
Before iPad, there're already quite a lot tablets and notebook with touch screen, developed by SONY, Casio, Fujitsu, with excellent hardware, but they are all ignored, so they ever thought there's no market of such things.
Now again most ereaders have good hardware but with poor software and bad design!
The decisive factor is software not hardware, it's proved again and again.
