Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)
Linda Tressel (1868)
First published anonymously in serial form from October, 1867, until May, 1868, in Blackwood’s Magazine and in book form in 1868. Trollope’s authorship was acknowledged when the book was re-published a decade later.
Set in Nuremberg, this novel shows a young woman, Linda Tressel, being bullied into an engagement with an unwanted middle-aged suitor, by an aunt who is a religious bigot. Will she succumb to the pressure? What will happen when she meets a younger man whom she likes better?
The character of the aunt is very well-drawn. She genuinely means to act for the best, and is mistakenly convinced that the proposed marriage is the will of God.
