LCD is improving way faster than eink. Either eink has hit the limit of the tech or they just don't have the money to invest in improving it. And since the tech is not improving, people are not buying. Vicious circle.

Plus, how many people read enough to warrant buying and carrying around a dedicated ereader? That may be their biggest problem.
I don't like the Carta screen, it's too creamy for me. I prefer the blue/white of Pearl. I already have two lighted ereaders and 3 non lighted ereaders so I'm not ready to buy another without a very good reason.
