You'll want do download and install Kindle for PC for Windows XP to Win 7 from Amazon's website and download your books to that (they'll go to my kindle content then). The Win 8 Metro apps stores books differently (it stores them in a bunch of small files). There are a couple of threads in the Kindle forum if you want more detail on the Win 8 app and how it stores things.
