That's certainly possible, too. One would like to think the main reason for any sale is to give value to your customers, encouraging them to remain customers.

Sometimes. Not every book you might want has a special price.
When there is a deal, sometimes the combined price of the ebook and audiobook is no better than the audiobook alone, and this has little interest to some one who only wants the audio book.
I'd imagine if they thought the Whispersync deals were cutting in to their membership profits, they'd modify the deals, rather than give more away.
I love Amazon and appreciate all the deals, but I acknowledge they have a business to run.
